Pronominalization and Expectations for Re-Mention: Modeling Coreference in Contexts With Three Referents

چکیده

The relationship between pronoun production and interpretation has been proposed to follow Bayesian principles, combining a comprehender’s expectation about which referent will be mentioned next their estimate of how likely it is that potential re-mentioned using pronoun. Model received support from studies in several languages (English, Mandarin Chinese, Catalan, German), but tested contexts have limited two event participants, whereas natural language discourse often involves with more than participants. In this study, we conducted three story continuation experiments assess the performs complex contexts. Our results show even comprehenders can behave rationally when interpreting pronouns, they appear require sufficient context build up coherent representation situation do so. addition testing basic claim (Weak Bayes), test central prediction Strong form hypothesis: components model (next-mention expectations choice referring expression) are influenced by dissociated sets factors. comparison, Experiments 2 3 confirm closest fit Model, supports Weak Bayes, none our find evidence predictability affects pronominalization rates, corroborates Bayes. Finally, whether rate sensitive factors related ambiguity argument/adjunct status referents; participants vary pronouns most strongly based on grammatical role antecedent (subject or not), smaller effect presence/absence gender-matched competitor no syntactic position competing referent.

Multilingual Mention Detection for Coreference Resolution

This paper proposes a novel algorithm for multilingual mention detection: we extract mentions from parse trees via kernelbased SVM learning. Our approach allows for straightforward mention detection for any language where (not necessary perfect) parsing resources are available, without any complex language-specific rule engineering. We also investigate possibilities for incorporating automatica...

A Joint Framework for Coreference Resolution and Mention Head Detection

In coreference resolution, a fair amount of research treats mention detection as a preprocessed step and focuses on developing algorithms for clustering coreferred mentions. However, there are significant gaps between the performance on gold mentions and the performance on the real problem, when mentions are predicted from raw text via an imperfect Mention Detection (MD) module. Motivated by th...

Using mention accessibility to improve coreference resolution

Modern coreference resolution systems require linguistic and general knowledge typically sourced from costly, manually curated resources. Despite their intuitive appeal, results have been mixed. In this work, we instead implement fine-grained surface-level features motivated by cognitive theory. Our novel fine-grained feature specialisation approach significantly improves the performance of a s...

Machine Learning for Mention Head Detection in Multilingual Coreference Resolution

This work introduces a machine learning approach to the identification of mention heads needed for multilingual coreference resolution (MCR). We evaluate the method and compare it to a heuristic baseline and a rule-based approach, which are widely used in coreference resolution systems. We use the CoNLL-2012 shared task data sets, which include data for Arabic, Chinese, and English. We show tha...
